The H1 Tag

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:43 pm

The H1 tag is another of the key components that the search engines use to evaluate your content for indexing information. This is a location that warrants a keyword phrase as part of the content. You can also use h2, h3,… tags that also carry some weight.

Example: <h1>South Florida Web Site Marketing </h1>

You can control the size of the font of the h1 tag using CSS thus allowing the tag not to be oversized.

H1 Tags are usually found near the top of the content area, but can be anywhere on the web page.

Where to place keywords

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:41 pm

Where do you Keywords phrases belong?

Placing keyword phrases on a web page requires a strategy to allow the search engines to get the message that your web page is devoted to that keyword.

The first appearance of a keyword phrase must be in the title, description, and meta tags. After that, the keyword phrase needs to be located in the first part of where the text begins and last paragraph of your web page.

You do not want to go over board with your keyword phrase, because that can actually work against you. Now I say this with reservation, because in the past I have seen web pages rank well with that keyword splashed all over the web page. However, I think the top search engines have addressed this in their updates for the ranking algorithms.

It would be helpful to hyperlink the keyword to an internal web page if possible.

How Web Video Can Get your Message Across

Tag: Web MarketingSmitty @ 2:20 pm

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for youtube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded : “Good luck with that one, pal”.

So he posted a retaliatory video on youtube. The video has since received over 6.2 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: “Good luck with that one, pal”.

Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has lead to a sharp increase in orders.

The moral of this story… Adding Video to a website (via YouTube) can be a very powerful marketing tool. (Note:I would make every attempt to settle a dispute before getting to a point like this.)

Keyword Metatag

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:40 pm

The next tag to examine is the keyword meta tag. Keyword meta tags are usually found in the header portion of the web page.

The use of the keyword meta tag has lost it’s luster with the search engines due to web site owners stuffing them with keywords. Some search engines still use them to help define a web page ranking. I still use them if only to keep track of the keywords I have on that particular page.

When using the Keyword meta tag – use no more than 10-15 keyword phrases.

Example:

<meta name=”keywords” content=”search engine marketing, website marketing, search engine submission, search engine optimization,  pay per click marketing, link research, SEO, SEM, South Florida, Broward, Fort Lauderdale, Florida”>

The Description Metatag

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:39 pm

The Description meta tag is found in the header section of the web page and provides an opportunity to offer more of a description for the search engines.

An example syntax for this tag is: <meta name=”description” content=”Search Engine Marketing by Smitty’s Holdings”>

The vast majority of web pages floating out there in the cyberworld have no description tag in the header.  Why is it important? It may not be as important as it once was, but I feel it should contain a clear sentence about the web page because it may be displayed in the search engine result page (SERP). Each Search Engine uses this tag differently and some engines place more weight on it.

Suggested use: Enter the keywords phrases in the sentence to enriched description. Use no more than 40 words or 3 sentences. I still find it useful.

Social Security E-mail? Calculation Errors?

Tag: General Web NewsSmitty @ 11:22 am

This is another lame attempt to get your Social Security and personal information. I am getting these e-mails way too often. The problem is that older population may buy into this type of e-mail because they may not realize it is a fake. If you have grand parents out there, be sure you take some time to call them and let them know this is FAKE and not respond to it.

The link in this e-mail will take you to:

http://statements.ssa.gov.reedasv.be/

Obviously the link takes to to somewhere other than  www.ssa.gov

You can always contact the Social Security Administration to let them know about this type of fake e-mail:

Title Tag

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:38 pm

It is important to use the keyword phrase in the Title tag so the search engines know what that web page is about. This information is displayed in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

Use your keyword phrase in the title with the company name and location on each page of the site.

Example:

<title>Internet Marketing – Smitty’s Holdings – South Florida</title>

At the top of your browser window, (The Blue bar of the window) you will find some text when browsing different websites. That text id is pulled from the Title Tag of the web page. This title tag is used by the search engines to get an idea of what is on your web page. The Title Tag also sets the indexing spider to search for the keywords in the web page. The information needs to be clear and concise.

It’s always a good idea to use the keyword phrase as well as the name of the Company or Organization in this tag. Try to keep the number of words to 9 – 12 max and the number of character from 68 to 74 characters. Google displays up to 68 characters in the title, but Yahoo displays about 73-74 characters. Any more characters will be truncated.

Careful consideration for your keyword phrase should be followed.

DOCTYPE (DTD)

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:36 pm

It is important to add a Document Type Definition (DTD) otherwise known as a DOCTYPE for every web page. You would be amazed to see how many web sites do not even use them. Aside from making your website W3C compliant, it helps the browser to interpret the web page correctly. Add DOCTYPE at the top of every page.

These are some of the different types of DOCTYPE that can be used for your web page.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd”>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”ISO-8859-1″?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> <html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xml:lang=”en” lang=”en”>

Here are some links for further information on DOCTYPE: http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum88/4677.htm http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#a_dtd_XHTML-1.0-Transitional

Web Page Naming

Tag: OptimizationSmitty @ 7:35 pm

The next tip I wish to examine is the actual web page name. Of course, your main web page is usually an index.html or default.asp or something similar. What I am focusing on are all your web pages for each service or product .

For example, if I was to talk about a services web page, instead of naming that web page the services. php, I would call it website-marketing-services.php. This way, I got my keyword phrase into the file name and the search engine spiders will read it and store it into the indexes.

The next step or tip would be to hyperlink the keyword phrase Website Marketing Services to the web page we just named website-marketing-services.php. Remember, this tip alone is not the only thing to do, these tips need to be combined with other techniques to make complete strategy to help your rankings – which I will cover over time.

There are a load of tips, but we are just starting

Good luck with your Website Marketing and Optimization,

-=Smitty=-
