Click Fraud on the Rise

Click Fraud Rates Hit Two-Year High
by Laurie Sullivan

The industry click fraud rate climbed to 17.1% in the last quarter of 2008 versus 16.6% a year earlier, according to stats released by Click Forensics today. The increase represents the highest level recorded since the company began tracking rates in 2006.

The Complete Article…

My understanding:

It appears that 1/3 of this click fraud is being created by bots – automated software.

The most of the Click Fraud is coming from Canada, Germany and China.

It is important to monitor and check your Google Analytics often – otherwise, it’s going to cost you.

My suggestion is to avoid the content match, I feel this is where a good amount of the fraud stems from and keep the focus on Search Engine Queries.

What are the Best Keywords?

Category: OptimizationSmitty @ 1:46 pm

Selecting the best keywords phrases for your web pages can be challenging. There are many ways to locate the keyword phrases. One of the most inexpensive way is to check out your competition, especially when they outrank you. Go to each web page and see what they have, if they have a blue widget page, then carefully think about a blue widget page for your website if you sell them.

Realize, that there are many variations of a keyword phrase. If you are in a local market, using the city, county or even the state with your keyword phrase will be the most effective. Like “South Florida Blue Widgets”.

The best way to find out which keywords to use are to examine the different services on the net.

Web’s tax-free ride may end
States are trying to raise revenue, but collecting from online sales won’t be easy
By Rachel Metz | The Associated Press
January 13, 2009

NEW YORK – Shopping online can be a way to find bargains while steering clear of crowds — and sales taxes.

But those tax breaks are starting to erode. With the recession pummeling states’ budgets, their governments increasingly want to fill the gaps by collecting taxes on Internet sales.

This Week’s Top 10 Spyware Threats

Category: General Web NewsSmitty @ 6:28 pm

This Week’s Top 10 Spyware Threats

Coming in at number 8 this week is C2.Lop. You may ask yourself, what’s a lop and well I will tell you. Lop stands for “Live Online Portal” and is a group of spyware and hijacker programs that set your Internet Explorer start page and search features to use the site lop.com or one of its clone sites. Lop.com is a web site owned by C2 Media. It is mainly a pay-per-click search portal where other web sites pay for each click-through to their site via lop.

Lop.com created a program which is labeled variously as an mp3 search program, a porn search program, or some other such thing. The installer turns the user’s web browser into a device with a seemingly endless supply of links to lop.com. A later version (installer name mp3serch.exe) omits this desktop feature as its bugginess reportedly led to its being discontinued. Both versions install a stripped down browser which uses the Internet Explorer web browser engine.

This browser automatically launches at mp3search.com. The Lop installer also makes dramatic changes to Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Netscape Navigator. The default search engine pages, toolbar settings, and start p age are changed. The lop installer adds scores of Internet shortcuts in Internet Explorer’s Favorites folder and in Mozilla’s Bookmarks.htm file. Lop’s are not fun, don’t even be tempted!

Where does your Website Rank?

Category: Web MarketingSmitty @ 11:40 am

When was the last time you checked to see where your website was ranked for a keyword or keyword phrase?

You need to be aware of your web ranking because it does change, even with Pay Per Click Campaigns, your website can move on and off the results pages.

To manually check your website against a keyword list, you need to go to each Major Search Engine and run your test.

The Top Three Search Engines are Google, Yahoo and MSN (Live)

First, I suggest creating an accurate list of keyword phrases you feel you need to be found by. Decide if you are searching on a National level versus a Local Level.  A Local Level is more designed for a company that is supplying a targeted market in a specific area with it’s goods or services. So you will use a city, county, township, etc with each keyword phrase.

Once the list is created, then go to a Search Engine and begin the process of searching for each keyword phrase. This can take a little time depending upon the size of your search list.

Type in your selected keyword phrase, like “South Florida Website Marketing”. Then look for your website or another site that might mention your website. I searched for my website and can find it in the top ten. Great!

Now record where you are ranked, if you are not conducting a Pay Per Click Campaign, then examine only the Natural Rankings (avoid counting the Sponsored Advertising) – count down from the top which number result your are and which page.

You can continue doing the same process for each keyword phrase. Yes, this can take time to do, but it is important to know where you are ranked for your products or services. Knowing which page you are ranked can help you determine how much more work needs to be done to achieve a higher ranking. These are some thing you may need to do to help your web page rankings:

  • You may need your web pages optimized
  • To add additional content or even another web page with the information needed to hopefully achieve a better ranking.
  • Spend time on Directory or Search Engine submissions
  • Writing articles and posting them
  • Creating press releases
  • Even setup a Pay Per Click Campaign

More than likely, even if you are ranked great today, you may slip due to competition. That is why it is so important to know where you are ranked every month.

*****************

For those who do not have the time to conduct these important searches for ranking purposes, I offer a service to create ranking reports for your selected keyword phrases. You can select up to 30 Keyword phrases. We run the report against Google, Yahoo, MSN (Live), and AOL searching the top 50 positions for each keyword against your domain.

This is what a Sample Report looks like:

LinkedIn – Social Networking for Professionals

Category: Web MarketingSmitty @ 9:19 am

I just read this article about Linkedin.

Bad news for workers is good news for LinkedIn

By Jon Swartz, USA TODAY
Social-networking site LinkedIn, which lets business professionals create online profiles to seek jobs and network, is adding members faster than ever despite its own recent layoffs and a management shake-up. About 1 million people flock to the network every two weeks now, compared with 1 million per month earlier this year. (The site has 33 million members from 8 million two years ago.)

To read more…

Social Networking is a great way to link your business and website. Linkedin has about 1 million people visiting the network every two weeks, according to the article. That is a tremendous amount of traffic. Anytime you can get a link on a website with an enormous amount of traffic – is an opportunity.
