Block IP addresses

Tag: General Web NewsSmitty @ 6:34 am

Dealing with issues

There are several reason to block IP addresses:

  • Visitor spamming your blog
  • People ripping your whole website
  • e-mail harvesters
  • Suspicious log activities that indicate illegal image usage
  • How about people linking to your website and placing your content in a iframe.

The next question is what to do about it?

The easiest way to prevent someone from stealing from your site is blocking the IP address (this assumes that they have a static IP address) or ip address range.

In the htaccess file, you can place

deny from 66.40.10.24

This one IP address ( 66.40.10.24 ) I selected is a website that takes my content from my webpage and hosts it on their website in two ways. The use the actual content on the web page and then use the whole web site in an iframe. On top of that they use my Title, Description and Keywords to create the  dynamically generated web page to display & sell Google Adsense ads.

Of course, I reported this to Google and they do not seem to understand that this violates thier own terms and conditions. Since I reported this over two months ago, Google has done nothing, so adding the deny will prevent them from using my web content to profit by.

You may ask how did I find out that this was even going on?

It’s simple, conduct a link search on Google or Yahoo

links: www.smittysholdings.com

Then examine the results. You will see how many incoming links are linking to your website.

Warning! Be care of the links you click on some time they may carry warnings of viruses or malware. You may see this type of message from Google.

This site may harm your computer. – this link will take you to Google’s definition of what will harm your computer.

There are a host of reasons to block people, but is this additional work worth it?  I think in some cases it is worth it and must be addressed. Just do not go over board with it or the htaccess will be so big – it could affect your website loading quickly.

Good luck and have a Happy Holiday.

Web Marketers & Online Search Ads

Tag: Web MarketingSmitty @ 7:44 pm

This ad discusses why people are using Pay Per Click Ads to drive more targeted traffic to their websites.

……………………

Marketers Hone the Focus of Online Search Ads
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY – Technology

Jessica Jensen makes money when people visit her Low Impact Living website, a directory devoted to helping you “green” your home.

In a tough economy, sales are down and customers are taking longer to pay bills. But she has not cut back spending on search advertising — those little text ads that appear near search results. “As with every other business, we need customers,” she says. “I can’t stop advertising, so instead I’m spending every dollar and dime efficiently.”

The Complete Story…

What is Web Marketing?

Tag: General Web NewsSmitty @ 11:47 am

.

I am always faced with the task of  explaining what Web Marketing is – for website owners looking for help with marketing their websites.

Most of the time, I hear that all they want is to be on the top of the results in the search engines, but they do not realize how to get there.

The first thing I have to do is to carefully review their websites and list my observations.  I can then draft an e-mail letting them know what I see and what I feel they need to gain the rankings they want. Sometimes the ranking expectations cannot match the fierce competition, which forces more expensive means to market a website, but other methods can be developed to pull portions of a larger market.

Most of the time,  my honest e-mail will help the client understand what is involved and how I approach  web based marketing. This is how I approach reviewing a website:

  • I examine the website to locate the strengths and weaknesses.
  • An outline is created of what I need to do:
    - Keyword Analysis
    - Determine how many web pages require Optimization
    - Checking the code on each web page and fixing errors
    - Optimizing each web page with the selected keyword phrases
    - Submissions to the search Engines and Directories
    - On going Link Building
    - Setting up blogs, newsletters and/or forums
    - Pay Per Click campaigns
    - Monthly Web Site Reporting – Visitors, Web Page Rankings, Keywords Used, Landing pages, Demographics, etc.
    - Plus any other processes I feel will enhance their rankings
  • A complete marketing plan is developed with the understanding that the client can modify the plan to suite their budget needs.
  • The estimated expectations are explained.
  • I also explain that there are no guarantees for Natural Optimization – Since the Search Engines can change the algorithms at any time – thus changing the rankings.
  • There are reasonable expectations with pay Per Click Marketing, but it can be expensive and must be measured carefully to determine ROI. If the cost outweighs the return, then it is not profitable to do.

The hardest aspect of Marketing, is explaining the process and using the time test ways to increase a web site’s visibility. You also need to be open to new ideas and changes in the market place, like video, social networking and new technology.

I spend the time marketing for my clients, because I know my clients cannot take the time to market for themselves and run their businesses at the same time. You need to have someone in your corner you can trust to do the things that have to be done to produce targeted traffic, yet look for new opportunities to market your website in a profitable way.

WordPress 2.7 is out!

WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane”

By Matt. Filed under Development.

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, we’ve listened to your feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version. (Download it now, or read on for more.)

My comments:

This is a terrific upgrade to WordPress.  Not so much from the visitor’s perspective, but from administration. The administration is incredibly clean, easy to locate anything and laid out beautifully. Great Job!

Now I have to get all my clients upgraded.

Mysterious phone calls

Tag: General Web NewsSmitty @ 8:00 am

.

I hear my phone ring late at night only to find that no one is on the phone. I get a call from 954-652-0645 at 1:35AM – hang up.  It turns out that after a little research search that this turns out to be a local fax harvester. Bascially, this local Broward company has a system that randomly calls phone number waiting for a fax response. If it finds one, it adds that fax number to the list. You are now in the fax spammer list from hell.

I don’t know about you but this needs to be addressed. If anyone knows who this phone number belongs to, please let me know.

I think that every phone number needs to be clearly identified so you know who is calling – if you have caller id.

I think the phone company should stop this abuse of our paid services, but they see it as a business opportunity.

You can try to speak with BellSouth – AT&T – you can contact their customer Support for Annoyance Call Problems

“The AT&T Annoyance Call Bureau provides customer support in the investigation of repetitive/illegal harassing, threatening, or obscene telephone calls or text/email messages received on your AT&T landline or wireless phone.”

“The Annoyance Call Bureau does not investigate telemarketing, collection, or other types of electronically generated calls. These calls are not illegal and there are AT&T Landline, Wireless and Messaging products and services available to assist customers in managing these types of unwanted or annoying phone calls.”

Here are the services AT&T will try to sell you:

Anonymous Call Rejection (Not Applicable to Wireless)
- this was totally useless when I tried this service

Anonymous Call Blocking Anonymous Call Blocking (ACB) intercepts calls from people who have used special blocking features to prevent their name or number from being provided to people they call. When the ACB service is turned on, callers hear a message telling them to hang up, unblock delivery of their phone number, and call again. Your phone will not ring unless the caller removes the block. You can use the service with or without Caller ID.

Call Block *60

Call Block allows you to block calls from up to six specified phone numbers. Just put the numbers on your Call Block list and those callers are prevented from calling you. The number is on your telephone bill.
- Again this was useless when I tried this service

Call Return / Automatic Call Back (*69) (Not Applicable to Wireless)

AT&T Call Return / Automatic Call Back allows you to call back the person that just called you. That means that you can finish your task at hand without missing that important call. Just by dialing *69, you will automatically be connected to the previous caller. It’s a simple and easy way to be connected to your last caller. *69 Call Return / Automatic Call Back will try to place your call for up to 30 minutes if the number is busy. Simply listen for a special ring that repeats twice to let you know your call has been placed. To cancel all *69 Call Return / Automatic Call Back requests, pick up the phone and press *89. *69 Call Return / Automatic Call Back can return some long distance calls. If you use this service to return a long distance call, you’ll be charged a long distance rate and the telephone number will appear on your bill.

This feature is available as subscription or pay-per-use.

Call Trace (*57) (Not Applicable to Wireless)

Call Trace may be an effective and immediate method in which to capture the telephone number last received. Availability of this service and charges for this service varies. Information collected can only be provided to law enforcement.

Caller ID
Caller ID can identify the source of annoying or harassing calls and allow you to screen unwanted calls. You can also order Caller ID with Name and Number Delivery, which displays both the name and number of the caller. Caller ID will assist you in seeing who has called your phone when you were not there. It is also a good way to collect the numbers of people you would like to call in the future.

Privacy Manager (Not Applicable to Wireless)
Privacy Manager provides Caller ID subscribers with the ability to intercept unavailable numbers. Privacy Manager will intercept all unidentified calls before your phone rings and require the caller to identify themselves. If the caller does not identify themselves, the call is terminated and your phone does not ring. If the caller’s number would normally not be displayed (such as “anonymous,” “private,” “out of area,” or “unavailable” on your Caller ID display), Privacy Manager would ask the person to announce their name and to identify themselves. Once the person states their name, your phone will ring and you will have the option of either receiving or rejecting the call. Privacy Manager allows you to identify the caller before you speak to them.

Voice Mail
AT&T Voicemail Service (AT&T VMS) is a centrally located computerized voice messaging service. This service eliminates the need for customer-provided answering machines and allows a customer to receive a message when their phone is in use or when the phone is not answered. Messages can be retrieved from any phone in the world by dialing the Voicemail access number.

For more information on how to use this and other calling features, please visit http://att.com/features.

Unfortunately, AT&T (BellSouth) looks at this as a marketing opportunity to sell you additional useless services instead of contacting the owner of the phone number and placing them on record to cease and desist.

This stuff really pisses me off.
