Website Marketing Tips #7 – Where to place keywords

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 8:37 am

Where do you Keywords phrases belong?

Placing keyword phrases on a web page requires a strategy to allow the search engines to get the message that your web page is devoted to that keyword.

The first appearance of a keyword phrase must be in the title, description, and meta tags. After that, the keyword phrase needs to be located in the first part of where the text begins and last paragraph of your web page.

You do not want to go over board with your keyword phrase, because that can actually work against you. Now I say this with reservation, because in the past I have seen web pages rank well with that keyword splashed all over the web page. However, I think the top search engines have addressed this in their updates for the ranking algorithms.

It would be helpful to hyperlink the keyword to an internal web page if possible.

Website Marketing Tips #6 – The Keyword Meta tag

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 10:14 pm

The next tag to examine is the keyword meta tag. Keyword meta tags are usually found in the header portion of the web page.

The use of the keyword meta tag has lost it’s luster with the search engines due to web site owners stuffing them with keywords. Some search engines still use them to help define a web page ranking. I still use them if only to keep track of the keywords I have on that particular page.

When using the Keyword meta tag – use no more than 10-15 keyword phrases.

Example:

<meta name=”keywords” content=”search engine marketing, website marketing, search engine submission, search engine optimization,  pay per click marketing, link research, SEO, SEM, South Florida, Broward, Fort Lauderdale, Florida”>

Website Marketing Tips #5 – The Description Metatag

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 12:43 pm

The Description meta tag is found in the header section of the web page and provides an opportunity to offer more of a description for the search engines.

An example syntax for this tag is: <meta NAME=“description” content=“Search Engine Marketing by Smitty’s Holdings”>

The vast majority of web pages floating out there in the cyberworld have no description tag in the header.  Why is it important? It may not be as important as it once was, but I feel it should contain a clear sentence about the web page because it may be displayed in the search engine result page (SERP). Each Search Engine uses this tag differently and some engines place more weight on it.

Suggested use: Enter the keywords phrases in the sentence to enriched description. Use no more than 40 words or 3 sentences. I still find it useful.

Website Marketing Tips #4 – Title Tag

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 3:11 pm

It is important to use the keyword phrase in the Title tag so the search engines know what that web page is about. This information is displayed in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

Use your keyword phrase in the title with the company name and location on each page of the site.

Example:

<title>Internet Marketing – Smitty’s Holdings – South Florida</title>

At the top of your browser window, (The Blue bar of the window) you will find some text when browsing different websites. That text id is pulled from the Title Tag of the web page. This title tag is used by the search engines to get an idea of what is on your web page. The Title Tag also sets the indexing spider to search for the keywords in the web page. The information needs to be clear and concise.

It’s always a good idea to use the keyword phrase as well as the name of the Company or Organization in this tag. Try to keep the number of words to 9 – 12 max and the number of character from 68 to 74 characters. Google displays up to 68 characters in the title, but Yahoo displays about 73-74 characters. Any more characters will be truncated.

Careful consideration for your keyword phrase should be followed.

Website Marketing Tips #3 – DOCTYPE (DTD)

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 7:04 pm

It is important to add a Document Type Definition (DTD) otherwise known as a DOCTYPE for every web page. You would be amazed to see how many web sites do not even use them. Aside from making your website W3C compliant, it helps the browser to interpret the web page correctly. Add DOCTYPE at the top of every page.

These are some of the different types of DOCTYPE that can be used for your web page.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd”>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”ISO-8859-1″?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> <html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xml:lang=”en” lang=”en”>

Website Marketing Tips #2 – Web Page Naming

Tag: Optimization,Web Marketingadmin @ 9:05 am

The next tip I wish to examine is the actual web page name. Of course, your main web page is usually an index.html or default.asp or something similar. What I am focusing on are all your web pages for each service or product .

For example, if I was to talk about a services web page, instead of naming that web page the services. php, I would call it website-marketing-services.php. This way, I got my keyword phrase into the file name and the search engine spiders will read it and store it into the indexes.

The next step or tip would be to hyperlink the keyword phrase Website Marketing Services to the web page we just named website-marketing-services.php. Remember, this tip alone is not the only thing to do, these tips need to be combined with other techniques to make complete strategy to help your rankings – which I will cover over time.

There are a load of tips, but we are just starting

Good luck with your Website Marketing and Optimization,

Website Marketing Tips #1 – Selecting a domain name

Tag: Optimizationadmin @ 10:25 am

I decided to write a series of Website Marketing Tips to look at the many factors that can affect a websites’ ranking in the search engines. There are some fundamentally similar factors that all search engines use.

The first factor I want to talk about is the domain name. It seems to me that I have seen some sites actually do better than others based solely on the name of the website. Using the keyword phrase in your domain name can actually help. You may have to go through many searches to find the correct domain name you like.

Example: Using a business directory in Broward county.

I created a domain named broward-directory.com. Using the dash in the middle helps break up the domain into two words in the eyes of the search engine index. I added the location and a keyword to help the search. If I measure that against the smittys-directory.com (my other choice), I will get better results with the broward-directory.com because it uses the search location and the keyword – (assuming everything else is equal). The results vary, because there are other factors involved, but overall it works well.

The tipping points of Global Warming – are we there?

Tag: General Web Newsadmin @ 11:40 am

Being an environmentalist at heart and in practice, I read this article in USA Today that made my feel that the world we are passing on to generations after us will be totally different – ruined – in terms of what we have today. This article is worth reading and thinking about. Is there really anything we can do to help save the planet, save the way we live our lives today, or even take action to make changes that will result in stopping the impending environmental destruction caused by our past and present generations?

Is Earth near its ‘tipping points’ from global warming?

Earth is spinning toward many points of no return from the damage of global warming, after which disease, desolation and famine are inevitable, say scientists involved in an international report due Friday on the effects of climate change.

Opinions vary about how long it will take to reach those “tipping points” and whether attempts to cut planet-warming gases churned out by power plants, vehicles and other human industry can slow, halt or reverse the harmful effects in coming decades. Some suggest it might be cheaper for society to adapt to the changing climate than to roll back the pace of warming.
